A sewing label is the small woven tag that says who made something — "Handmade by Rosa", a shop name, a monogram. A quilt label does the same job on a bigger scale and often records the story too: the maker, the year, the place, who the quilt was made for. Both are the same product underneath: a woven label sewn into the finished piece. This guide covers what to put on one, which size and fold to choose, how to attach it, and what a small run actually costs.
Why Woven Instead of Printed or Stamped
On a woven label the lettering is made of thread, woven into the label itself, so there is no ink to fade, crack or wash out. That matters most on quilts and baby items that go through the machine for years. Printed fabric labels and iron-on transfers are cheaper per piece for one-offs, but they show wear much sooner. The full comparison is in woven labels vs printed labels.
What to Put on the Label
Sewing labels for garments and gifts
- Your name or shop name, or "Handmade by …" — the line that matters most.
- A small symbol or monogram if you have one.
- Optionally a year or a short word ("est. 2026", "with love").
Quilt labels
- The maker's name, and the quilter's if someone else did the quilting.
- The year, and the town or state.
- Who the quilt was made for, or the occasion.
Every extra line needs room: lettering in thread has to be at least 0.06″ tall and reads comfortably from about 0.08″, so a four-line quilt label needs a taller label than a one-line name tag. See how small a woven label can be for what fits at each size.
If you sell what you make, a maker's label is not the whole story: clothing sold in the US also needs fiber content, care instructions and country of origin. Clothing labels for Etsy sellers explains what a shop needs.
Choosing a Size and Fold
- Flat sew-in (quilts, blankets, bags): sewn down on all four edges on the back of a quilt or inside a bag. Quilt labels usually run 2–3″ wide and 1–1.6″ tall, so several lines of text fit. See sew-in labels.
- End fold or loop (hems, side seams, quilt bindings): the ends tuck into a seam, so the label sticks out as a small tab. A neat way to sign a quilt is to catch a folded label in the binding seam.
- Center fold (necklines): folded in half and sewn into the neck seam of a sweater or dress. Order it at twice the width you want to see — see center fold labels.
For knitwear and anything worn against the skin, choose damask: the finer weave is softer and holds smaller lettering.
How to Attach Them
- Quilts: hand-stitch a flat label to the backing with a slip stitch before or after quilting, or catch it in the binding. Stitching through the backing only keeps the stitches off the front.
- Garments: sew the label into a seam as you construct the piece, or stitch a flat label on with a small straight stitch around the edge.
- Iron-on: woven labels can be ordered with iron-on backing for cotton and other heat-safe fabrics, but for anything washed often, add a few stitches as well. The trade-offs are in iron-on vs sew-in woven labels.
What Custom Sewing Labels Cost
Woven labels have a loom setup per design, so the price per label falls quickly with quantity. From our published cost study:
- A 1.6″ × 0.6″ name label: $59 for 50, $90 for 100.
- A 2.8″ × 1.2″ label with more lines: $64 for 50, $101 for 100.
- Five labels of your exact design with a photo proof: $30 with a Proof Pack.
The configurator shows the exact price for your size before checkout, and every file gets a free artwork review within 24 hours. Each design is woven separately, so ten different names are ten designs — if you want one label per quilt with a different dedication each time, put the name or year on the label and write the dedication by hand.
Designing Without a Logo
You do not need artwork to start. The online label designer lets you type your name, pick a font and add a symbol, with a live preview of the woven result. If you already have a logo or a hand-drawn mark, upload it instead. Makers ordering for a small shop will find more on woven labels for handmade products.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do custom sewing labels cost?
From our published cost study, 50 woven name labels of 1.6″ × 0.6″ cost $59 and 100 cost $90. Five labels of your exact design with a photo proof cost $30 as a Proof Pack.
Can each quilt label have a different name or date?
Each design is woven separately, so every different name or date is its own design. For one-off dedications, weave the maker's name or shop name and add the personal line by hand.
Do woven quilt labels survive washing?
Yes. The lettering is thread woven into the label, so there is no ink to fade or wash out. Sew the label down on all edges; iron-on backing alone eventually lifts on items washed often.
Do I need a logo to order sewing labels?
No. The online label designer lets you type a name, choose a font and add a symbol, with a live preview. You can also upload your own artwork.
