What a compliant care label has to show
Care labels are a legal document as much as a branding surface. In the United States the FTC Care Labeling Rule governs what must appear and how permanently; selling into the EU adds fibre-name requirements on top.
Fibre content, by percentage
Every fibre making up 5% or more of the garment must be listed by generic name with its percentage by weight, in descending order. Trade names alone are not sufficient — "Lycra" needs "elastane" beside it. Components that differ from the main body, such as a contrast lining, are declared separately.
Care instructions must be complete
The rule requires a full regular-care procedure plus any warnings, covering washing, bleaching, drying and ironing. "Dry clean only" without further detail is not enough if a reasonable care method exists. Symbols alone satisfy the EU but the US expects words, so most brands selling both ways print both.
Country of origin and identity
US labeling requires the country where the garment was manufactured and an identity — either the brand name registered with the FTC or an RN number. Origin is where the product was made, not where your supplier is registered, and those routinely differ.
Permanence is part of the requirement
The label has to remain legible for the garment's useful life, which is why printed satin is the standard substrate rather than paper or a hangtag. It also makes the care label the natural carrier for a Digital Product Passport QR code — the same durability requirement, satisfied once.
