Designing a hang tag that works at retail
A hang tag is the only part of your labeling a customer handles before buying. It has to survive a stockroom, hang straight on a rail, and carry the information a buyer or a till actually needs.
Use both sides
The front carries brand and product identity; the back is where price, size, barcode, care summary, composition or a QR code belong. Printing one side and leaving the other blank wastes the most useful surface you have — and a blank reverse reads as an afterthought at retail.
Card weight decides how it feels
280 gsm is stiff enough to stay flat on a rail and resist curling in a humid stockroom. Lighter stock creases at the punch hole and bends in a shipping carton, which is the single most common reason a tag looks cheap in the hand despite good artwork.
Plan the punch hole into the layout
The hole needs clearance from both the edge and any artwork — roughly 5 mm from the trim line, with nothing important within the surrounding area. Designs laid out without it end up with a hole punched through a logo, or a tag that tears at the first tug.
Set up for print, not for screen
Supply artwork in CMYK with bleed past the trim line, and keep text and logos inside a safe margin. RGB files shift on conversion, most visibly in saturated blues and greens, and artwork built to the exact trim size will show a white sliver wherever the cut drifts by a fraction.
