How to apply an iron-on patch

The application process

  • Press, never slide. Position the patch adhesive-side down, cover with a thin pressing cloth, and push straight down with a hot dry iron for 30–40 seconds. Sliding shifts the patch before the adhesive grips.
  • Press the reverse too. Turn the garment inside out and press the same spot for a further 15 seconds. Heat reaching the adhesive from both sides is what makes the bond hold.
  • Cool before you handle it. The bond sets as it cools, not while hot. Leave it 60–90 seconds. Patches need longer and firmer pressing than labels because the woven body is thicker and slower to heat through.

Wash performance

  • Fine at normal wash temperatures. Machine washing at 30–40°C, inside out, holds the patch indefinitely when it was applied correctly in the first place.
  • Heat and agitation are what break it down. Repeated 60°C+ washing, high-heat tumble drying, and fabric softener all attack the adhesive. Line drying materially extends patch life.
  • Add a stitch for hard-worn garments. A single perimeter stitch makes the patch effectively permanent. Many brands use the iron-on backing purely to hold position while sewing — which is a perfectly good reason to order it.

Where iron-on patches work — and where they don't

Best surfaces

  • Denim and canvas. Tight, heat-tolerant weaves with plenty of surface texture for the adhesive to key into. The most reliable substrate there is.
  • Cotton caps and structured hats. A flat crown panel takes a patch cleanly — see woven patches for hats for placement and sizing detail.
  • Jackets, totes and workwear shells. Cotton drill, twill and heavyweight blends all bond well and are washed infrequently enough that adhesive alone is sufficient.

Sew these instead

  • Nylon, coated and waterproof shells. Technical fabrics either melt at pressing temperature or carry a finish that the adhesive cannot grip. Sew, or use a hook-and-loop backing.
  • Leather and faux leather. Direct heat marks and distorts the surface permanently. These are always stitched.
  • Stretch knits and jersey. The fabric moves and the patch does not, so the corners lift with wear. Knitwear should be sewn on — the merrow edge gives a clean stitching border. If it needs to be removable, use hook-and-loop.

Iron-on patches vs iron-on labels

Both use the same heat-activated backing, but they are different products. Patches are decorative, worn on the outside, and usually 40 mm and up. Labels are branding or compliance pieces, worn inside at the neck or seam, and usually much smaller.

If you are labeling the inside of a garment rather than decorating the outside, iron-on woven labels are the product you want.

Iron-on is a finish applied to a finished patch, not a different construction. Your artwork, dimensions, color count and edge type stay identical whether you order iron-on or plain-backed.

That means you can order both from one artwork file — iron-on for retail and events, plain for garments that go through a sewing line.

Avoid nylon, waterproof and coated shells, leather and faux leather, and anything with a water-repellent finish — these either cannot take the heat or give the adhesive nothing to bond to. Highly stretchy knits are also a poor match, because the fabric flexes and the patch does not, which lifts the corners over time. On those materials, sew the patch on instead.
