Why a logo survives weaving better than embroidery
Resolution is thread, not stitch
An embroidered patch resolves at the size of a stitch, which is why small text fills in and thin lines merge. A woven patch is built on a loom at far higher pick density, so the same mark keeps its counters and separations at a size where embroidery would lose them.
Color count is nearly free
Twelve colors cost about 16% more than two at 1,000 pieces, because color is loaded at setup rather than applied per pass. A multi-color brand mark does not need simplifying for budget reasons — see the published cost data.
Flat profile, no cracking
Woven sits flush rather than raised, so it does not add bulk on a cap panel or a chest placement. And because the image is thread rather than ink on top, there is nothing to crack or peel after washing.
Consistent across reorders
The weave file is generated once from your artwork and stored, so a reorder in six months produces the same patch as the first run. Embroidery digitising is more sensitive to machine and operator variation between batches.
Getting your logo ready
Supply vector where you can
- SVG, AI, EPS or PDF. The loom is driven from the outline, so vector stays sharp at any patch size.
- Raster works if it is large. Supply the biggest original you have rather than an upscaled copy — upscaling invents detail the weave then tries to reproduce.
- A screenshot from a website will not do. 72 dpi is soft at patch scale, and it is the most common reason a proof disappoints.
What does not weave
- Gradients and drop shadows. Thread cannot fade between tones. Convert to flat color separations before uploading.
- Photographic imagery. Same reason — a photo has no separable color areas.
- Hairline detail. Below roughly 0.5 mm at final size there are not enough threads across the line. See minimum line thickness.
Size to the finest element
Judge the patch size by the smallest thing in the mark, not the mark overall. A simple wordmark reads at 50 mm; a crest with fine linework may need 75 mm or more. Enlarging is usually cheaper than redrawing.
Every file gets a human review
Artwork is reviewed within 48 hours before anything reaches a loom. If a line is too fine or type too small at your chosen size, you hear about it then — not when the patches arrive.
Edge and backing for a logo patch
Merrow or hot-cut
A Merrow border gives the classic badge outline and suits circles, ovals, shields and rounded rectangles. A hot-cut edge follows any outline precisely, which is what a logo shaped like a script signature, an animal or a mountain needs. Full comparison in merrow vs hot-cut.
Backing follows placement
Plain sewn backing works anywhere. Iron-on suits cotton, denim and canvas. Hook-and-loop is for patches that need to come off — uniforms and tactical wear where one garment carries changing insignia.
